During the last half of July 2004, a really gigantic sunspot group (#652) became visible to the naked eye

Note comparison of the sunspot group with the diameters of Earth and Jupiter

The group remained visible for over two weeks as the Sun's rotation moved the sunspots from the east toward the west limb (edge) othe the Sun

Large sunspot groups occasionally become visible to the naked eye but require safe solar viewing techniques
