When's the best time to see features on the moon?
Click here for the answer. For a complete listing of all our star parties, please visit the Star Parties page.
From time to time, the AAC hosts star parties near first quarter moon rather than new moon. Scroll down to see a list of upcoming moonlit dates.
Many amateur astronomers tend to dismiss the moon (it's a bane for seeing faint objects like galaxies and nebula) but it's still a favorite for many beginners and veterans alike. Telescopes reveal more detail on the moon than any other celestial object. Everyone can find the moon, even in light polluted skies.
The moon may seem "dead", but it changes every hour as the terminator slowly waxes and wanes across the lunar landscape. Crater rims, peaks, even long, winding rills appear and vanish throughout the night. You can spend a lifetime exploring the moon, even in a small telescope!
To learn more about observing the moon, please read Magnificent Moon by Dr. Howard Cohen (requires Acrobat reader).
In addition to the moon, we also look at available planets, and a few other starry objects that don't require pristine skies and large-aperture telescopes.
These star parties are very casual, and open to the public. Star party rules are relaxed (but please, be thoughtful with flashlights and car headlights).
If the location is at a business locale, such as a restaurant, they would appreciate your patronage in return for hosting us.
