Iridium 67 Flare (40K jpg)

Cedar Key Iridium Flare

    Technical Information

  1. Date: 2001 January 13
  2. Time: 6:57 p.m. EST
  3. Location: Cedar Key, Florida
  4. Camera: Cannon F1 (tripod mounted)
  5. Lens: 28mm, f/2.8
  6. Film: Kodak 800 print film, 28mm, f/2.8
  7. Exposure: 12 seconds (approx.) at f/5.6
  8. Comments: Altitude flare about 31°, Predicted magnitude = -7 (according to Heavens-Above). In order to capture both flare and foreground, a wider than normal lens used. In order to not overexpose the brightly illuminated foreground, a much smaller aperture used than usual (f/5.6 vs. wide open). As a result, the flare did not photograph as bright as it appeared in person (many times brighter than nearby Venus). Also, due to the reduced aperture, no stars were captured even though the sky was very dark and full of stars. For more info on Iridium satellite flares, see Catch a *Flaring/Glinting Iridium.
