The Alachua Astronomy Club, Inc. has two electronic mailing lists:

ATM-OBSERVERS-L Currently a public, unmoderated announcement and discussion list. Anyone may subscribe. All messages posted immediately once sender approves their message. List specifically for those interested in amateur telescope making (ATM) or observing, or wish to discuss related topics. More info here. (This list replaces an older AACM-L e-mail group.)

AAC-L A public, moderated list. Anyone may subscribe but all messages filtered by a list moderator. Primarily for announcements. Not a discussion list. More info here.

FLIDA-L Why not also join the e-mail list of the Florida Section of the International Dark-Sky Assoc. (FLIDA)?

The ATM-OBSERVERS-L E-Mail Service

The purpose of the ATM-OBSERVERS-L list is to provide announcements and reminders about ATM (Amateur Telescope Makers) meetings of the AAC or observing events, or to allow discussion of related subjects. (Subscribe to AAC-L if you want announcements and reminders about all club or other general astronomical events.) This list is unmoderated to allow free discussion of list topics.

Also see the ATM Meetings page for meeting dates, times, locations and topics.

If you subscribe, expect messages regarding:

Announcements and reminders of local ATM monthly meetings or related ATM events and other related business
(If not interested in ATM news or observing, you may not want to subscribe.)

Occasional notes about astronomical happenings and events

Discussion or chat items or announcements from subscribers to this list

Other matters deemed pertinent by the list owners and editors

REMINDER: ATM-OBSERVERS-L is also a chat or discussion group. Subscribers can send e-mail to this list once they approve their own message. (If a sender does not subsequently approve their message, their message will not be posted.)

If you do not want to receive e-mail that discusses or chats about list topics, do not subscribe to this list.
(This list is too new to establish the amount of traffic that will go through this list.)

All e-mail sent from ATM-OBSERVERS-L contains a signature line that reminds subscribers how to post to this list and how to unsubscribe from this list.

Subscribing to ATM-OBSERVERS-L

Send e-mail to listserv@lists.ufl.edu

Use no subject or signature

In body of e-mail put SUBSCRIBE ATM-OBSERVERS-L firstname lastname
(Example: SUBSCRIBE ATM-OBSERVERS-L John Kepler)
Note: Do NOT use John Kepler—use your own name!

Spell list's name carefully: ATM-OBSERVERS-L
(Note the two dashes in ATM-OBSERVERS-L; the last character is the letter L not the numeral one)

Send your request to listserv (listserv@lists.ufl.edu) and NOT TO ATM-OBSERVERS-L!

Notice that listserv is spelled without a final letter "e" (it is listserv NOT listserve)

Later check your e-mail (very important):

You should receive a confirmation message

You must reply OK to the confirmation to activate your subscription
(Alternatively, the confirmation message will give you a web address to use to confirm your subscription.)

Confirm within 48h or your request will be cancelled

You will receive an e-mail notification of acceptance and a welcome message if you successfully subscribe

You are not subscribed until you confirm your subscription as described above!
Removing yourself from this list is equally simple (see below). Messages from this list are also archived in the listserv Web archive. Hence, anyone can review past messages by looking at the ATM-OBSERVERS-L archives! Reminders about how to post messages to the list or how to unsubscribe are appended to all messages sent from the list.

(You must be logged on under same userid as when you originally subscribed.)

Posting Messages to ATM-OBSERVERS-L

Subscribers to the list can also post to the entire list by sending their e-mail message to atm-observers-l@lists.ufl.edu

You will receive a request by e-mail asking you to approve your own message. (This precaution will help avoid spam and inappropriate messages from outside the list.)

Messages successfully approved appear in the ATM-OBSERVERS-L Archives

Replying to Messages

Remember ATM-OBSERVERS-L is a chat or discussion group. However, . . .

BE CAREFUL: If you wish to reply to a message, you should usually reply only to the AUTHOR of the message and not the entire list if your response is intended only for the sender of the original message

Do not reply to the entire ATM-OBSERVERS-L list unless you absolutely feel the reply should be viewed by the entire list

List editors reserve the right to delete all subscribers who post inappropriate messages or violate proper e-mail etiquette

If you wish to be informed of general club announcements and other related news, you should also subscribe to the club's main e-mail list, AAC-L

ATM-OBSERVERS-L Archives

You can read all previously posted messages to the ATM-OBSERVERS-L. All ATM-OBSERVERS-L postings are archived by month at the University of Florida's Listserv Archives.

If you have trouble subscribing to ATM-OBSERVERS-L, report the problem by sending e-mail to webmaster@floridastars.org.
