Tenth Anniversary Edition: Acknowledgements

A thank you to all who helped produce this anniversary edition

Acknowledgments Thanks to all who have contributed articles to FirstLight newsletters for the past ten years. We are nothing without you.

A special thanks to those who made this archive a possibility. First and foremost, thanks must go to my co-editor, Duane C. Sandene, who helped with the scanning on the Optical Character Reader (OCR), spent hours at the photo copier, kept the files in order, and proofread with enthusiasm. Thanks also go to FirstLight publisher and my predecessor as editor, Charles S. Broward (Chuck), who provided the archival copies all the way back to the beginnings in 1987, and also helped to decode the OCR files.

My way of saying thanks to George Russell is to dedicate this archive to him. His wife, Louise, told me that before he died he expressed a desire for a quite passing, with no eulogies or services. I hope he doesn't mind all the fuss, but was difficult to ignore the enormous contribution that George made to the newsletter for eight years. After Chuck, Duane, Charlie (first AAC president) and I decided to create this retrospective edition we could not escape the value of George's contributions.

A separate archive will be created to document George's construction of a six inch f/10 Dobsonian mount telescope, a project that gave all of us much pleasure during the last years of his life.

My own memory of George is that of an unassuming, gentle man with a quiet but persuasive manner of speaking. In 1990, he asked me if I could help represent AAC for Science Fair evaluations. I had no previous experience, but George convinced me that I could do it. He was right; I loved that assignment and got more involved in my community because of that simple request.

I am certain that others who knew him will have similar stories to tell, hopefully on future pages of FirstLight.

A Word about This Edition and Copyright

As much as possible, we have tried to present the articles as they appeared in FirstLight. The original visual format of the newsletter has not been preserved, however, so that the HTML versions of these files will present a more uniform appearance. The progression of styles, typefaces, etc., has given way to a format which we hope will provide for your reading pleasure—on a more or less standard computer monitor screen. You may reproduce any of these articles if you give credit both to the author and to this on-line edition of FirstLight.

Note: Ms. Mydock first produced this wonderful Tenth Anniversary Edition in 1998. Since then I have added other FirstLight articles and begun a "Second Tenth Anniversary Edition" to cover articles from 1998 to 2007. Articles from both ten year anniversary editions can be accessed through our FirstLight web page.
