On August 20th, 2002, Don Loftus demonstrated to the AAC-ATM SIG how to clean optical surfaces with collodion. Collodion for cleaning optics
The meeting was held at the Seminar Room of the Physics Department at the University of Florida. This was our first hands-on project where the club member could visualize how the work is perform. Thanks to Don for the demonstration!
Here are some pictures of our meeting!
The miracle stuff! It really works!
If you want more info and where to get it, please visit Mavidon, a provider of this wonderful stuff!Don's 6" homemade mirror with a thick layer of dust ready for cleaning. The 6" mirror has been wrapped with a Masking tape "dam." Pouring the collodion on the mirror. The collodion on the mirror. Don runs the collodion on across the mirror. The first half of the mirror covered with the collodion. Don removes the dam on the mirror. Another view of the collodion on the mirror. The stuff really works! Half the mirror is completely clean! Working the second half. Peeling the collodion on the second half. The mirror is completely clean! While the collodion on the mirror was drying off, Don started to work on a Bausch & Lomb lens Remi peels off the collodion from the lens while Don keeps taking care of the mirror. The lens and some glasses are harder to peel than the aluminized mirror; if you don't believe, ask Mike! Thanks to Don Loftus for introducing us to Collodion! It really works wonderfully! On May 20th, 2003 we had a second take for the collodion usage. This time we had some low and high viscosity samples from the Mavidon company.
(You can purchase Collodion from Mavidon, Inc.)
The results has been a PowerPoint presentation of how to use collodion. If you are interested, you can download it from here. (You will need PowerPoint on your computer to run the presentation.) You can also view the presentation on the web. (If you have a slow Internet connection, the PowerPoint presentation may take awhile to load.)
