Tenth Anniversary Edition: From April 1990 FirstLight

Minutes of March 30, 1990, Officer's and Board Meeting

by Andrea Vann-Jensen

Present: Mark Cowan, Howard Cohen, Marion (sic) Cohen, Chuck Broward, Andi’ Vann-Jensen, Jeff Majewski called in.

It was decided that the Officer/Board meeting would be held separate from the regular club meeting. The date for this has not been set yet. If an issue needs membership voting this will be done at the next club meeting. Minutes from the meeting will be published in the club newsletter. These meetings are open to all members who would like to attend.

Topics discussed:

1- How to gain new members-

Have "open to public" star parties. These need to be well published, and an event of current interest. Make a large sign to put in the teaching observatory. Have a manned display at the Oaks mall, and then have parking lot viewing. We need to have more publicity for the club and its activities.

2- How to keep old members-

Have 3 events a month. These are the officer-Board Meeting, the regular club meeting, and a star-party. In addition to these we can do other events like Spring arts etc. Also have a suggestion box at the club meeting.

3- Structure of Club meeting-

Have a SHORT business meeting no longer that 15-20 minutes at the beginning of the meeting. Next will be the guest speaker. After that a break of 10-15 minutes. Then have Dr. Cohen do a short talk on theory or whatever he wants. If there is further business to discuss it will be done after this. We then adjourn to the parking lot and look at whatever was discussed if possible.

4- Viewing Sites-

Select several viewing sites, this will be over a wide area. Have a West site and East site to start with. If you know of a place let us know and we can go try it out. Place a Classified ad for an observation site and see what happens.

5- Long term club goals-

Have a loaner scope program. Start now using the books Dr. Cohen gave the club to start our library. Look for a permanent observation site for the club.

6- Suggestions for topics to talk about and look at-

Young Moon, what features can be seen; when is the best time to look? Select a topic that can be easily viewed from the parking lot and talk on that.

We need members input on this new approach to club structure. If we don't do something the club will die. Please come to the April meeting and give us your views, or put them in the suggestion box. Let us know what you want out of this club, what you like and don't like, what you want to do with astronomy. See you April 10.
